We started a blog series called ‘Through the eyes’ – where we interview different professionals within the fashion industry, giving you an insight into their career, responsibilities & more. We decided to kick off the series in-house, interviewing our very own Sr Recruiter – Julieta Cangas.

Tell us a little bit about yourself                                                                                                                                                                       I am Julieta, 26 years old, I am from Venezuela and lived in London for 8 years; now I live in Barcelona, city I am learning to love.

How did you get into recruiting?                                                                                                                                                                     I got into recruiting by coincidence, I always heard about it and had friends working in recruitment- but I never thought that I would end up working in it. G&M Fashion Career got in contact with me for a job role, and I decided to give it a try, 3 years later I am still part of the team.

What does your job entail?                                                                                                                                                                               I am an account manager / Snr Recruiter. My job mainly consists of maintaining and developing the relation with existent and prospect clients. I also support the junior recruiters on their activities in recruiting & sourcing.

Why Fashion and not another industry?                                                                                                                                                   Fashion is something that I always liked and followed, however I never thought that I would be able to work so closely with it. Fashion is something that helps people to express themselves, like a kind of art. It also allows you to have the possibility to work in all kind of roles, from sales to marketing, logistics and product which ended up becoming my expertise.

What are some misconceptions that job seekers have about your job?                                                                                             The biggest misconception is that people tend to think that our job is only about sending CVs – that’s not the case – our role is being able to find the perfect match for our client and for our candidates- and we do this by talking with people and learning about their experiences, we tend to analyze everything that the candidates does in order to see whether this person could represent the brand or company.

What are some common mistakes you have noticed in the job application process?                                                                    The biggest mistake is only applying because the name of the role is appealing- candidates normally don’t read the job description and compare it with their own experience. They see the job and imagine it as something they want to do. However they forget that there is going to be a person reading or studying the CV, who is an expert and can tell right away if you could be a relevant candidate or not. The job description of the role you are applying for should match with your CV and experience.

What advice would you give to job seekers in the fashion industry?                                                                                                     Have patience! Which is applicable for job seekers within fashion, but other industries also. Searching for a job takes time, motivation and dedication.

Why should a job seeker want to work with/apply through G&M?                                                                                                        Because for us is not about a job, but a career- we will follow you for this specific role and for life. We think about your future before anything.

What is the craziest thing a job seeker/ candidate has ever said to you?                                                                                               A question that I will never forget is: “What would happen if I arrive late to the office?” – Don’t get me wrong, it’s great when the candidate has questions about the role and company’s culture- but be careful with the questions that you ask.

Why do you love this job?                                                                                                                                                                                   The outcome is very rewarding, the happiness of the candidate when they get the role they wanted makes me love my job.
